Everyone agrees that something should be done about crime. But what?
What are the reasons for crime and what can be done to reduce it?
Criminal behaviour and the community, who is to blame?
We are doing something about crime. The Educational Shakespeare Company is putting a lot of effort into finding ways to prevent people who have committed serious offences from re-offending. An important technique has been getting offenders to make personal short films that confront issues of criminality, how they got involved and why they have moved away from a life of crime.
The process of making these films has brought real understanding and transformation to the lives of the offenders who took part. We believe that this work can make an important contribution to the debate on crime.
ESC is hosting a series of public screenings in your area of a films made by offenders at the EXTERN project in Belfast (see flyer for details).
There will be a discussion after the screening led by an ex-offender from your local community who made one of the films. The screening will be open to the public including people who have an interest in the issues raised – family and friends of the offender, victims, people who work in the criminal justice system, business people, community activists, and politicians.
Please come along to the screening and take part in this important discussion.
